Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Pancreas transplant in type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Pancreas transplantation is a proven therapeutic treatment option for adults with insulin-dependent or type 1 diabetes mellitus and is superior to intensive insulin therapy with regard to the efficacy of achieving normoglycemia and control of secondary diabetic complications.

Patient must meet one of the following criteria :

For Pancreas transplant alone (PTA) : Insulin therapy and absolute deficiency of endogenous insulin (as demonstrated by C-peptide level of less than 2 ng/mL) with severe acute complications such as ketoacidosis / hypoglycemic unawareness. These patients typically have normal or near-normal renal function.

For Simultaneous Pancreas - kidney transplant (SPK) : Insulin therapy and absolute deficiency of endogenous insulin (as demonstrated by C-peptide level of less than 2 ng/mL) along with Renal insufficiency (with an eGFR of less than 20 mL/min or dialysis dependence)
